「北州」
江戸・浅草の吉原における四季の移り変わりを表現した舞踊で、扮装も大道具も用いない「素踊り」で演じられるご祝儀ものの名曲です。1曲の中で立役としては奴・武士・男衆・馬子・幇間・商人を、女方ではいろいろな階級の遊女・禿といった役柄を表現し、さらに風景描写をも表現することが要求されます。

"Hokushu"(North Province)
This is called typical "Nihon Buyou"( Japanese traditional dance). Socalled "Suodori" without gorgeous clothes ,wig and needed high technical skill.

In the title of this dance, the Yoshiwara District is playfully referred to as the "North Province" because it is located in the northern area of Edo(Tokyo). This dance creatively expresses the variety of men and women through the seasons in the Yoshiwara District.
