Benjamin Sibille founder of the Collective for a European Civic Service explained that France’s large trade deficit with China comes mainly from importing huge amounts of Chinese manufactured goods and digital services like TikTok. He noted that while France exports products like Airbus planes, China still controls key materials—especially rare earths—that Europe depends on for technology and weapons. Sibille said the European Union is trying to reduce that dependence to gain more economic independence. He also pointed out that Macron wants more “mutual investment,” meaning both sides should open their markets and make trade fairer for French and Chinese companies. According to Sibille, French investors influenced Macron’s trip, but the visit also reflects France’s long-standing ties with China. Finally, he said that Macron’s meeting with Xi Jinping, happening as Putin visits India, shows how diplomacy, trade, and global politics are all closely connected—especially when it comes to the war in Ukraine.
