Identifying ways to collect data from multiple clinics is essential to efforts to learn about best evidence-based practices across settings and disseminate the findings. This talk will describe what Practice Based Research Networks are and how they assist providers and researchers in their efforts to identify best evidence-based practices. We will share our lessons learned from being a member of a PBRN and experiences within CFHA when a research network existed. We will also identify issues to address if such a network is to be sustainable. Finally, we will discuss interest and opportunities for the CFHA’s REC members to support members’ engagement with a PBRN or other ideas on how we can collectively join our efforts to identify best practices.

Presenters:
Bill Sieber: Bill Sieber, Ph.D. is a clinical health psychologist who co-founded integrated behavioral health (IBH) at UC San Diego with Dr. Kallenberg in 2002. As a Clinical Professor in both Family Medicine and Psychiatry, he currently serves as Director, overseeing IBH services across 13 primary care clinics in the UCSD health system. He has been a member of CFHA since 2006, is on the Editorial Board for Families, Systems, and Health, and has served for many years on the REC in CFHA. In addition to providing direct patient care 20 hours per week and supervision of two dozen BHPs, as well as serving as Associate Director of Research for the Department of Family Medicine, he provides keynote presentations and educational seminars across the country to an array of health care providers.

Rusty Kallenberg: Dr. Gene “Rusty” Kallenberg is Professor Emeritus of Family Medicine and was the Chief of the Division of Family Medicine and Vice Chair of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at University of California, San Diego From 2001 to 2020. He is the co-founder of the IBH efforts at UCSD Dept. of Family Medicine, has been a member of CFHA for over 20 years and served on the Board of Directors and as CFHA President in 2014. He is also the Director of the UCSD Centers for Integrative Health and is a member of the Academic Consortium of Integrative Health and Medicine (ACIMH). Dr. Kallenberg’s interests include new models of primary care, integrated behavioral health in primary care, medical informatics, integrative medicine, learning health systems and undergraduate/ graduate medical education/competency assessment in communication skills, doctor-patient-family relationships, and professionalism.
