Within international environmental law, the prominence of subsidiary bodies, such as scientific advisory bodies, have continued to grow, particularly in pursuit of ensuring global concerted actions to address environmental challenges are based on best available science, data and information. However, there have been various iterations of such bodies, especially in relation to their design, composition and function. As the international community continues to engage in the negotiation of an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, the potential role for a subsidiary body (or bodies) has been a critical point of discussion, especially as it relates to identifying chemicals, polymers and plastic products of concern, and conducting assessments as needed by the COP. This episode of SIDS Talk Plastics will feature expert speakers offering their views on existing scientific advisory bodies within international environmental law, lessons learnt and opportunities for a potential scientific advisory body under the future plastic pollution instrument.
