GMA Highway Bicol - Alternate Route Albay to Camarines Sur - 29 December 2021

This video contains a portion of our NCR-Albay-NCR Road Trip Adventure - an alternate route to Maharlika Highway (AH26) from Polangui, Albay to San Fernando, Camarines Sur via Matacon-Libon-Polangui-Junction Rd, Libon-Pantao Road (Bicol 638), Nabua-Libon-Oas Road (tagged as Libon-Bacolod-San Vicente-Marocmoc-Buga Road in Google Map), Nabua-Balatan Road and GMA Highway (tagged as Provincial Road in Google Map).

This is a good alternative route, especially in the early morning when Maharlika Highway traffic is slowed down considerably by big slow-moving trucks and overtaking is quite difficult and risky.

Here is a quick distance comparison of this route to the other two usual routes most people take when driving to/from Albay-Camarines Sur (based on Google Map, points of reference: Polangui Market in National Road, Polangui, Albay and Abergo's Store at the corner of GMA and Maharlika Highways in San Fernando, Camarines Sur):

Route 1: Maharlika Highway via Naga City - 65.4 kms
Route 2: Maharlika Highway via Polangui Albay-San Fernando Cam Sur
and Tagbong-Pili-Camarines Sur Rd - 65.2 kms
This route: 66.5 kms

As you can see, the 3 routes are almost identical in distance. One more pro is the scenery - there is a portion where Mayon Volcano is even visible. Con - there were some stretches of damaged roads, although they shouldn't be a concern because of the very light traffic and drivers could just use the opposite lane (CAVEAT, this is a late post so repairs may have been done already since, OR NOT and the road have degraded).
