The contrast between light and shadow has always been crucial in photography and is more relevance than in other visual arts such as painting.
It could be argued, absurdly, that the "problem of shadows" conceals the entire contradiction on which the essence of photography is based.
In its claim to verisimilitude with reality, photography has always clashed with technological limitations that prevent it from rendering on film or sensor the full range of tones and details that the human eye is capable of conveying in the observed reality.
This is the origin of the photographic medium's closeness to that of painting, which makes photography a fully-fledged means of expression, yet firmly anchored in a misunderstood origin from reality. Within this peculiar language derived from the objective world, shadows play a fundamental role in the process of essentialization the image; they conceal elements and information, directing the viewer's attention wherever the photographer wants it.
It is therefore shadows that create images, sculpting light and establishing its limits, harnessing it and forcing it into its precise place within the visual frame.
The direction of light rays always highlights the object, which then emerges from the primordial condition of darkness and acquires a finite meaning from the relationship between light and shadow.
All this is well represented in the images in this collection, taken in different lighting conditions and in different urban settings.
The forms stand out from the darkness like objects endowed with an intrinsic plasticity, highlighted by the color that gives them their own authority; the city becomes the theater where this takes place, and the human presence, which acts as a catalytic element, adds dramatic pathos to the scene, capturing in a crystallized moment the eternal enigma of the human condition.
