The number of forts and batteries that have survived in Tobago is actually quite surprising when you think of Tobago’s size. Fort Granby, which was Tobago’s first British fortication, was built to protect the first British settlement called Georgetown which is now modern day Studley Park and Mt. St. George. But how did Fort Granby come by its name?

This is Queen Anne, she was most famous for uniting England and Scotland in 1707 and bringing the War of the Spanish Succession to a conclusion. She assumed the throne in 1702 and 319 years ago today she created the titles of Duke of Rutland and Marquis or Marquess of Granby.

Duke of Rutland is a title in the Peerage of England named after Rutland. Now Peerages are a legal system historically comprising hereditary titles composed of assorted noble ranks.

This is the coat of arms of the Dukedom of Rutland which Queen Anne bestowed on March 29, 1703. The Dukedom comes with a host of subsidiary titles such as the Earl of Rutl;and, Lor Manners of Haddon, Baron Manners but the one we are going to focus on is Marquess of Granby.

Now the first ever Duke of Rutland was John Manners
