On Monday, June 11 Dr. Steven Shamah, an internal medicine resident at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, presented a medical symposium for neighborhood residents. Inspired by the Healthy Bronx Initiative begun by fellow CIR members at Bronx hospitals,

Dr. Shamah designed the symposium to address some of the foremost health concerns of his own patients.

Three speakers gave lectures and answered questions: Dr. Rabin Rahmani, Director of Medical Education and Research, Division of Gastroenterology at Maimonides, spoke on the importance of colon cancer screening and the different types of screenings; Dr. Samantha Cohen, attending physician, Department of Gynecologic Oncology at Maimonides and assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, spoke about gynecologic cancer and cancer screening for women; and Dr. Jason Esses, cardiologist, spoke about new advances in cardiology and detection and treatment for heat attacks. Prior to the lectures, a "heart healthy" dinner was served to attendees by a registered dietician.
