Like a great many Republic Pictures serials, "Dick Tracy," had not one, but two directors. Alan James and Ray Taylor split directing duties on the project, and both have resumes boasting of several other serials for the studio. However, it would be one of "Dick Tracy"'s editors, William Witney, who would emerge as one of Republic's heaviest hitters in that department, directing or co-directing a total of 24 chapterplays for the company, beginning later that same year with "The Painted Stallion."
