Menstruation and Impurity: Decoding the Language of Ashaucha - Nithin Sridhar -

In this talk, the speaker clarifies the concept of ashaucha as understood in Hinduism. In doing so, the speaker debunks the modern popular notion that the Hindu concept of menstruation (ashaucha) is oppressive. The speaker also clarifies the rationale behind common restrictions during menstruation such as the restriction from cooking and entering temples. The speaker clarifies that menstruation or ashaucha is not impurity but rather the state of incompetency to perform certain dharmic activities. The speaker explains the meaning of ashaucha at the physical level, the vital or pranic level (where it is a heightened condition of rajas) as well as at the mental of manasic level. The speaker elaborates on the question of what does menstruation purify and how it restores the health of women. In sum, the speaker informs us that menstruation is basically a self-purification process that women are naturally endowed with.
