Hilo Bay is known as “the tsunami capital of the United States” because it gets more threats and actual tsunamis, due to the shape of the bay. Due to this, Hilo has seen many devastating tsunamis throughout its history. The Wailoa River State Recreational Area, including the surrounding area of the Waiakea Lagoon, is a park in Hilo, on Hawaiʻi Island (the Big Island) in the US state of Hawaii. It was developed as a buffer zone after the devastating 1960 tsunami that destroyed the central bay front district of Hilo and many deaths

It is now a beautiful park with lots of green area, ponds, rivers, and bridges with natural beauty that all can enjoy. It also boasts a King Kamehameha statue that replicated many places across the state of Hawaii.

Enjoy this short walk around the park, where you get to see the memorial and the King Kamehameha statue as well as walk across many open areas and across unique bridges (which was very hard to keep the camera stable when navigating!).
