A disturbing incident was reported by the public at the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour in Hambantota, where dogs were observed acting erratically after allegedly consuming water contaminated with the illegal drug "Ice" (Methamphetamine).

Three dogs were seen endlessly circling in the exact spot where 51 parcels of narcotics, recovered floating in the Southern Sea, had been temporarily stored. Upon inspection, it was determined that the dogs' unusual behaviour was due to drinking water contaminated with the "Ice" drug.

It is reported that the stray dogs that usually roam the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour area were not visible yesterday, and some are feared to have died. Authorities immediately rushed to the location and are currently providing medical treatment to the affected dogs.

Background:

The Sri Lanka Navy had seized 51 parcels of illegally smuggled narcotics (drugs) floating in the Southern Sea on Tuesday, the 14th of this month, and had stored them temporarily at the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour. The total weight of the seized narcotics was 839.254 kilograms. The Navy stated that the seizure was part of an operation to combat drug trafficking and distribution.

The seized consignment is suspected to belong to a drug trafficker identified as 'Unakuruwe Santha'.

Furthermore, another boat suspected of transporting a similar quantity of drugs was intercepted by the Navy in the Southern Sea today. The boat and the five individuals onboard have been brought to the Galle Fisheries Harbour.
