Описание к видео Tetris DX Ultra Mode 231,333 [former WR]

I recorded this video on 12/30/2007. At the time, this was a world record for Tetris DX, Ultra Mode, as recorded by Twin Galaxies - my score was 231,333, beating the previous record of 221,778. This record was beaten on 9/27/2010 with a 243,125, which remains the current record, though others have claimed scores over 260,000. In this game, I got 19 tetrises, 2 singles, and 1 double. I very nearly screwed it up at the end (as you can see), as I was quite frantic. After I achieved my record though, as thrilling as it was, I was in NO hurry to play that game again. I have not even attempted it again since! This took more hours of my time than I even want to know - it became a bit of an obsession for me in the fall of 2007. I may at some point revisit the game and see if I can score as high as others have claimed.

A side note about my game play in this video: you might wonder why I don't take many tetrises until the stack is pretty high. This is because pulling blocks all the way down to a low stack takes up a lot of time (the game features "soft-drop", but not instant "hard drop"). Thus to beat the record I discovered I would need to keep the stack in the 50-80% full range or so and hope I would get the i-block at a good time. So there is definitely a significant element of luck in getting this record. The blocks are completely randomized, so there is no way to predict when the next i-block will come around. Toward the end of your time limit, you then have to take the stack back to the ground to eke out the last tetris and last few points you can before the buzzer.

Since I've taken over 5 years to get around to posting this video, I decided it should be my first YouTube upload. For recording game play, I played Tetris DX on the Super Nintendo, using the Super Gameboy adapter, and recorded play on a VHS. I then recorded that on an iPad for this youtube video. Incidentally, sorry for the awkward camera angle and empty space on the side - I'll record better videos going forward.

As for the game itself, Tetris DX is an updated version of Tetris made for the Game Boy Color. Tetris DX is actually a really good update of the game. It has a few different modes for quick games and I would highly recommend it to beginners, as the maximum speed in marathon mode, while decently challenging, never gets impossible or excessively hard to play on indefinitely like it does in most versions of the game. (One of the best Tetris players out there, Harry Hong, has taken the marathon mode to its maximum possible score of 9,999,999 - which I know takes many, many hours to do.) On a technical note, the controls and rotation of the pieces is nice and fluid and somewhat easy on the player - the DAS charges very fast and the auto-shift moves very fast too, and there is a small lock delay on impact. Overall I think this version is a bit overlooked in the Tetris Universe. It would have helped to have a better title than "DX" surely. I guess the idea was to have a "deluxe" series of games that were improved versions of previous, black and white Game Boy games. But why not just call it "Deluxe" then - DX is confusing and sounds like any number of things, none of which are particularly good. Some say it kind of doubles as an abbreviation of Director's Cut as well, but that seems weak to me.

Since this is my first Tetris video - a bit about what got me started... like many, I got started playing Tetris when I got my good old original Gameboy (I think that was 1990), which came packaged with Tetris. I have always loved the game and played it off and on, but I guess my enthusiasm for the game was rekindled with the advent of YouTube, when I was awed by a video of an elite player of Tetris: The Grand Master - a game which I didn't know existed at the time (the series was created exclusively for arcades in Japan, where some of the world's best video gamers hang out).

I will be posting more Tetris videos to come! Thanks for watching.
