Connecting the kinematics of multiphase CGM gas flows to galaxy rotation

The CGM is a multiphase reservoir of gas surrounding galaxies which hosts metal-enriched outflows and metal-poor accretion. Addressing how gas flows in and out of galaxies is vital in understanding how galaxies evolve. We examine the kinematic connection between galaxies and their gas flows by analyzing 70 z 0.5 galaxies with HI absorption within 10-470kpc detected in HST/COS quasar spectra. We measured the fraction of HI gas that is aligned with galaxy rotation curves measured in Keck/ESI spectra. We find that this co-rotation fraction is correlated with HI column density and anti-correlated with impact parameter. High co-rotation fractions are present along both major and minor axes of the galaxies. This implies that both gas accretion and outflows show signatures of co-rotation out to 200kpc. We find that logN(HI) 16 is the best tracer of inflows and outflows. Our results will complement future HI emission surveys.
