Welcome to Day 18 of our Tail of the Dragon Tour.

The day started spectacularly well on the banks of the New River.

Crossing the bridge on our bikes was a little trickier on the way out, but the second time around on the gravel road didn't seem all that tough.

After climbing the mountain, we descended to the valley floor and ultimately reached the pavement. Our route out of the park followed a beautiful stream and charmed us all the way to the city.

As we rode up into Fayetteville we got wet. Stopping at Bob Evans we had a good nosh up and saddened ourselves by looking at the weather radar. Unfortunately, the radar showed rain for most of the trip, so we geared up for the worst. Luckily, as it turns out, we did have much rain at all and it was mostly drizzle for the ride.

After breakfast, we crossed the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest steel span bridge in the western hemisphere and the third highest in the United States. The building of this bridge reduced a 40-minute drive, down narrow mountain roads and across the river, to less than a minute. That factoid made us decide to ride that old, narrow mountain road. It is not great if you are in a hurry, or an RV, but it is a spectacular ride!

Riding through mountains and forests all day on interesting and curvy roads was cathartic. As was passing through charming towns and villages. This part of the state is decidedly more affluent than the areas where we spent our last few days.

We arrived in Elkin, West Virginia in the early afternoon. It was hot and sunny, and we had the mandatory stops; Dairy Queen, the laundromat, gas station and grocery store. Just the basics.

Riding north out of town we noticed that the vegetation looked decidedly spring-like compared to the summer foliage that we have been experiencing in the last week. We are expecting a low of 9° tonight and closer to 0 tomorrow. It is time to dig deep into our bags for our cold weather gear.

Our camping destination for the evening was the Bear Heaven campground in the Monongahela (muh·naang·guh·hee·luh) National Forest. There are 8 large campsites here and only one other is occupied. We chose the site right next to the other campers to annoy them. Joking. We are on the other side of the campground by ourselves.

After setting up our tents, we scavenged wood from the forest for our fire. Then, Spike made rice and a Cesar salad while I grilled two large filets of cod. Tres yummy.

We are expecting rain in the morning, so we set up the tarp as a shelter. Our plan is to ride to State College, PA tomorrow on our penultimate night of the tour.
