"I think both President Bush and Senator Kerry have emphasised their commitment to a very strong US-Israeli relationship and that's a relationship that is traditionally not marked by pressure. It is marked by deep dialogue, we do have very significant common interests, and we also have some issues on which we also disagree. But I think the President or Senator Kerry, whichever is determined to be the winner will continue first of all to strengthen this relationship which is really the backbone of our policy in this region and to see what we can do to bring about a negotiated settlement of the dispute with the Arabs."

Dan Kurtzer, US ambassador to Israel, avoided favouring one candidate over another as vote counting continued to show Democratic challenger John Kerry's chances for victory shortening.
