V-2 Indian Polity By M. Laxmikanth (Historical Background) | Crown Rule

Description:.
Crown Rule: Historical Background
Following the Revolt of 1857, the British Crown took direct control of India from the East India Company through the Government of India Act 1858. This act created the position of Secretary of State for India and established the Council of India to assist in administration. The Viceroy replaced the Governor-General as the head of Indian administration. The British implemented policies to consolidate power and prevent future uprisings, including a strategy of divide and rule.
