AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTIAN
By Bp. Joseph Boyd (in honor of Seymour and Lennie McWhorter)
[Verse 1]
I don’t need a new salvation,
Christ was born and that’s enough;
He took on flesh for our redemption,
And His grace still covers us.
I don’t chase the winds of fashion,
Nor the preacher’s latest spin;
I just walk that narrow pathway,
Where the saints have always been.
That’s the faith of the Church.
[Chorus]
I’m an old-fashioned Christian, walking in my Savior’s grace,
Receiving His Body in the Lord’s Supper, and always seeking after His face;
Kneeling in prayer, remembering Mee-Maw and Pappi, continuing in their holy prayers,
With their Holy Bible and Praying Hands, and the promise that we will meet them over there.
[Verse 2]
We don’t split the Church to pieces,
Over pride or worldly gain;
We believe what Christ once taught us,
And the Creed still says the same.
From the Jordan to the Highlands,
From Antioch to Rome,
We hold the faith of ages past,
Till the Lord shall call us home.
That’s the faith of the Church.
[Chorus]
I’m an old-fashioned Christian, walking in my Savior’s grace,
Receiving His Body in the Lord’s Supper, and always seeking after His face;
Kneeling in prayer, remembering Mee-Maw and Pappi, continuing in their holy prayers,
With their Holy Bible and Praying Hands, and the promise that we will meet them over there.
[Bridge]
One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism true,
The Spirit’s fire makes all things new;
One Church, one Bread, one holy cup,
Till the Bride and the Lamb are lifted up.
That’s the faith of the Church.
[Verse 3]
We don’t change the holy teaching,
For the world’s applause or cheer;
We just keep that old confession,
Christ is risen — Christ is here.
Through the saints who went before us,
Through the prayers of those who’ve died,
We are bound in holy union,
With the Church that’s glorified.
That’s the faith of the Church.
[Final Chorus – with choir harmony]
I’m an old-fashioned Christian, walking in my Savior’s grace,
Receiving His Body in the Lord’s Supper, and always seeking after His face;
Kneeling in prayer, remembering Mee-Maw and Pappi, continuing in their holy prayers,
With their Holy Bible and Praying Hands, and the promise that we will meet them over there.
[Tag sung soft]
Yes, their Holy Bible and Praying Hands,
And the promise that we’ll meet them over there.
That’s the faith of the Church.
