Olivier Meessen is a galerist in Brussels. His gallery is participating in Brafa art fair Bruxelles every year. He shared his opinion on how to approach a gallery and how to be an art lover.
First, I asked that nowadays, when mobiles and tablets and laptops are used to experiment artworks, and the people satisfied not to go personally to art fairs, what are the benefits to go to Brafa or to the gallery personally. Olivier mentioned that the real meeting with a galerist can highlight many aspects that you couldnt see online, andexperience with art should be a conversation, not a passive view. In that context, they decided not to have chairs in Brafa art fair, people can naytime come and have a talk with a gallery member.
Olivier also mentions that the gallery is representing artists who wants to say something. So the first aspect is the meaning of the artwork. A second step could be the pleasure of the eyes, and than the layers of the artwork.
We also talked about the way how someone start collecting. Olivier said that the family traditions are very important, and sometimes also the time, when someone moves into another house could bring possibilities. But there is no usual way to start collecting, every story is personal.
