Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Diagnostic
Faulty Circuit P0430 Camshaft Position Sensor
How To Diagnose and Repair Faulty Camshaft
Hey everybody— Renée here from O’Reilly Auto Parts to talk to you about a common diagnostic trouble code, or DTC. Today, the code I’ll be talking about is P0340.
If you haven’t stopped by a store for a free O’Reilly Veriscan diagnostic test, it’s a simple way to get a full readout and recommendations that could help with diagnosis and repair.
Technically speaking, OBD-II fault code P0340 indicates an issue with “Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit ‘A’”.
In practical terms, this means that the circuit wiring of the camshaft sensor is faulty in some way.
You could see multiple other error codes associated with this problem, and if it goes unresolved, it can cause major issues with your vehicle’s engine performance, even leading to engine damage.
The causes for this code can include issues with your camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, a rough running or misfiring engine, control module errors, or wiring issues like loose connections, damage, or corrosion.
Aside from a Check Engine light, you may experience hard starts or an engine that cranks without starting; engine hesitation, stalling, or dying and not restarting; misfiring; rough running, or poor acceleration.
Whether you notice any of these symptoms or not, it is not recommended that you drive a vehicle with this code until the problem is diagnosed.
Your vehicle may still run, but driving has the potential to make the problem worse or cause damage to other systems, especially if the engine is misfiring or running poorly.
Since the cause of this code can vary from one vehicle to the next, we recommend starting with an O’Reilly VeriScan report.
We also have additional resources on our How-To Hub to help you diagnose these and other symptoms.
If you’re not sure where to start on this repair, we’d be happy to recommend a professional shop in your area to help you determine which of the possible issues have caused the code or codes, and what your course of action should be.
