Indianapolis Warship Story: The USS Indianapolis, a heavy cruiser, tragically sank after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945, shortly after delivering components for the atomic bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leaving many survivors to face shark attacks and harsh conditions at sea.

Top-Secret Mission:

In July 1945, the USS Indianapolis, commanded by Captain Charles McVay, completed a top-secret mission to deliver the uranium-235 core and other essential parts for the atomic bomb to the Army Air Forces on Tinian Island. 

The Sinking:

On July 30, 1945, while en route to the Philippines, the Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58, and sank in 12 minutes. 

Tragic Aftermath:

Of the 1,195 crew members aboard, about 300 went down with the ship, and the remaining 890 were left stranded in the Pacific Ocean. 

Survival at Sea:

The survivors faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and numerous shark attacks for four days before being spotted by a PV-1 Ventura patrol bomber. 

Rescue and Loss:

Only 316 of the crew survived the ordeal, with many succumbing to shark attacks, dehydration, and the harsh conditions at sea. 

Wreck Discovery:

In August 2017, a research vessel located the wreckage of the Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea, lying at a depth of approximately 18,000 feet (5,500 meters). 

Legacy:

The crew of the USS Indianapolis was collectively awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2018 for their courage and sacrifice. 

Captain McVay's Court-Martial:

Captain Charles McVay was court-martialed for negligence in the sinking of the ship, becoming the only U.S. Navy commander convicted for losing his ship to enemy action during World War II.
