Toyota GR Yaris Hydrogen: this hydrogen-fuelled pocket rocket could be the future of motorsport

The Toyota GR Yaris Hydrogen represents a potential future for motorsport, using hydrogen fuel for endurance racing. The car is powered by a three-cylinder 1.6 turbocharged piston engine that runs on hydrogen. Toyota claims that the hydrogen engine has increased engine power and torque, with faster refueling times and increased range compared to previous versions. The hydrogen drivetrain has been tested in the Corolla Sport Hydrogen and the Corolla Cross H2 concept. Toyota is exploring hydrogen as an alternative to traditional fuels in motorsport, alongside synthetic fuels and pure battery electric options. The GR Yaris Hydrogen made its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb, with former Formula One driver Kazuki Nakajima and actor Rowan Atkinson among those who drove the car. While the hydrogen drivetrain shows promise, there are still challenges to overcome, such as improving hydrogen efficiency and decreasing irregular combustion. Toyota aims to develop a prototype hydrogen car that can compete in World Endurance rounds by 2026. However, the drivetrain is not yet ready for endurance racing at Le Mans.
