Our guide school program is for people who want to get out of their comfort zones, push their limits and discover what it takes to be a wilderness guide in the BC mountains. Learning how to saddle, shoe, pack, stake and hobble your horse is just the beginning of what you will learn on this training program. You will also learn about the mindsets, work ethic and commitment it takes to be a wilderness guide.
The training program starts with a week at the ranch to teach you the foundation skills, before heading out into the bush, staying for a week at one of our wilderness camps without running water, electricity or all the modern amenities. Get back to basics and discover what you're made of deep in British Columbia's wilderness.
The week at camp on our Two Week Wilderness Horseback Guide School will teach you how to navigate through the wilderness, cook meals over the campfire, take care of horses in the back country and learn about animal tracks and habitats.
Our guide students connect to nature by packing water from the creek, identifying wild edibles and observing wildlife in their natural habitat. They contribute to conservation by collecting data such as grizzly hair and completing a grass assessment for sustainable horse grazing. They experience personal development as they learn new wilderness skills and mindsets. They become more conscious and aware of the flora and fauna and of their own skills and areas for growth. Self-sufficiency happens by identifying wild edibles, being able to take care of themselves in the back-country with their newly learned skills and learning that you really don't need much equipment or gear to spend a week in the wilderness. Empowerment is the outcome of all of this as students discover they are capable of more than they thought, and that they are able to stretch the limits of their comfort zones to embrace new opportunities.
