BEEDINGS CASTLE, WEST SUSSEX
This country house at Pulborough, known to locals as Beedings House, Harley's Castle, or Iron Castle, was split into several properties in 1976. One of these is now on sale at Knight Frank with a guide price of £995,000.
The house was built in the style of a Baronial Stronghold in the late 19th century for Dr John Harley (c1833-1921), of St Thomas's Hospital and consultant physician of the London Fever Hospital, and contained 75 rooms. It was said that he was obsessed with the danger of fire so the property had stone floors, the concrete placed on rolled steel joists, instead of the traditional wooden floor.
Standing on the summit of a hill, it represented a replica of the ancient Norman castles that once guarded the Marches of Wales and of which traces were to be found along the border from Chester to Chepstow. The spacious windows of the Central Hall commanded some of the finest panoramic views in the south of England.
Harley was also a keen geologist and built Beedings Castle on early Upper Palaeolithic rock. During construction, a series of fissures in the house's footprint revealed about 2,300 pieces of stone-age tools. He was also a keen plantsman and planted its 480 acres of grounds with rhododendrons, azaleas, monkey puzzle trees, and several pines.
After Miss Phyliss Harley died in 1930 the house was later bought by the builders Allfreys and, during the Second World War, was occupied by the Canadian airforce. The Judd family bought it in 1949.
The property has undergone extensive restoration and refurbishment within the last two years. Many period features have been classically restored such as moldings, cornices, full-height mullioned windows, and period cast iron radiators to name but a few. Of particular note is the grand and principal room of the original castle, which has been restored to create a unique sitting room. The ceiling height has been restored and the mullioned windows flood the room with light.
