The Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement and Professor of Sociology Dr. Ted Gordon at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University presented a panel discussion on American Indian tribal sovereignty and the intersection of tribal, state and federal policy. This program connects to our mission to encourage students and community members to promote the value of politics and our shared identity as citizens.

Panelists for Native Activism and Autonomy: A Conversation with Tribal Leaders on Tribal Sovereignty included:

Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin, Chief Executive of Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe from 2000-2008 and 2012-Present.

Chairwoman Cathy Chavers, Tribal Chairwoman of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and Executive Board Member of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (MIAC).

Chairwoman Karen Diver, former Chairwoman of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and former Special Assistant to President Obama for Native American Affairs. Currently, she is Faculty Fellow for Inclusion Excellence at the College of St. Scholastica.

Ted Gordon, Professor of Sociology and First Year Seminar at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University and author of Cahuilla Nation Activism and the Tribal Casino Movement.

Tadd Johnson, Director of the Master of Tribal Administration and Governance (MTAG) and Professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
