KM Shaji, who was a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Indian Union Muslim League (a constituent of the Congress-led United Democratic Front, UDF), once said in the Assembly while referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, "Though it is a woman who is ruling there, it is a woman with more spine than a man." He was insinuating that women are less suited to rule. Responding to this remark, KK Shailaja, Health Minister and Central Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M), which is leading the Left Democratic Front, LDF), said, "Though it is a woman who is ruling? What is wrong if a woman rules?"
