Approximately 66 million years ago, an asteroid as big as Mount Everest hurtled toward Earth at a speed of 100,000 km/h. The impact unleashed energy equal to billions of atomic bombs, triggering a series of catastrophic events. This event, known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction, was one of the most significant mass extinctions in Earth's history. It wiped out the dinosaurs and led to the extinction of about 75% of all plant and animal species.

A massive asteroid, about 6-10 miles in diameter, struck Earth, creating the Chicxulub Crater. The impact released an unimaginable amount of energy, causing firestorms, shockwaves, and massive tsunamis. A thick cloud of dust and debris spread into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight for months or even years. This disruption caused a dramatic change in the global climate.

Around the same time, massive volcanic eruptions occurred in the Deccan Traps of present-day India. These eruptions released large amounts of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other gases, leading to long-term global warming and acid rain.

The blocked sunlight caused plants and phytoplankton, which form the base of the food chain, to die. This collapse of the food chain, combined with extreme temperature changes (cooling first, then warming due to greenhouse gases), resulted in the extinction of about 75% of all species on Earth, including the non-avian dinosaurs.

However, some dinosaurs survived—specifically small, feathered ones, which were the ancestors of modern birds. These birds adapted to the changing environment, ensuring their survival. Mammals, which had been small and insignificant during the age of dinosaurs, also began to thrive after the extinction. Over time, mammals evolved into larger and more diverse species, eventually giving rise to primates and humans.

The K-Pg extinction changed the course of life on Earth, allowing mammals and birds to dominate. It’s a powerful example of how catastrophic events can reset the planet’s evolutionary path and pave the way for new life forms.
