The benefits of sleep are well established, yet many people don’t get enough — and it’s costing us. One Army sleep experiment found that performance dropped up to 10 percent on seven hours of sleep, compared to nine hours — and up to 20 percent on five hours of sleep. Yet for many shift workers in the military, medicine, and law enforcement, where performance is critical, sleep disruption and sleep deprivation are common. The same goes for the estimated one in five workers who regularly do night-shift work.

So what are we to do? Would sleeping longer get us back on track? Not necessarily, but there is something that might: napping.

Would we all be more productive if we built naptime into the work day? Could napping offset the physical cost of sleep deprivation? And how long should a nap be, anyway?

A new study suggests that, yes, napping can improve our well-being and productivity — and that just 30 minutes of afternoon shut-eye could work wonders. Tech companies have already embraced napping (and on-site nap pods), but are the rest of us ready for a napping revolution?
