Chief Water Tender Day was on board the USS Oklahoma when tragedy struck. As the ship was hit, Day found himself trapped in a compartment that began to flood rapidly. With little time to spare, he sprang into action, helping his shipmates escape to safety. Day hoisted men out of the ship through a small porthole, knowing that his large frame would keep him from following. Sadly, he perished in his efforts, but not before saving the lives of 15 of his fellow sailors.
