Vlad the Impaler sets his Barons to Rights. Between 1458-1461 Vlad focused on internal affairs, determined to bring order to Wallachia. He passed strict laws on theft, lying & corruption. Sources tell us that the punishment for theft, no matter how minor, was death. In fact, there is a story that even today is known by all in Romania. It's said that in the middle of the public square in Targoviste, Vlad’s capital, a gold cup was placed on a pedestal, it wasn't locked in place nor was it guarded by any soldier & yet no one dared to steal it. For this, Saxon chronicles called Vlad a sadistic tyrant, but his own people saw him as the arm of justice. For only the thief must fear the punishment for stealing.

Next Vlad focused on ridding his government of corruption. Any noble that was found stealing from the treasury, accepting bribes or abusing tax collection was swiftly tried, executed, & their estates confiscated. Many noble families were part of the corruption & in this way Vlad was able to remove those loyal only to themselves while also creating a centralized administration.

But Vlad’s goal wasn’t to only remove corrupt administrators he also wanted to rid his realm of the noble families that for the past 60 years had schemed, backstabbed, & caused the fall of 10 different voivodes across 18 reigns. He put his plan into action on March 25, 1459, Easter Sunday. For the Easter Feast he invited the old noble families to join him, during the feast he asked them how many voivodes there had been recently. The nobles laughing responded “many”. To which Vlad responded by having them all arrested, but he wasn't finished yet. Next he had his brother, Mircea, exhumed & asked the nobles if it were true that they had buried him alive, after they confessed he had those nobles impaled & their families sent to the fortress of Poenari to build & repair the citadel. The rest of the nobles from the feast were executed.
