The answer typically is no, sadly. A few franchisors out there do have health care benefits, typically in businesses where the franchisee will need to hire a lot of employees. By offering health care benefits to those employees, they can attract and retain higher caliber people. Those franchisors then often will make that health care not only available to the employees of the franchise but also to the franchisee. But those are few and far between. But for the vast majority of franchisees out there, health care is something that we have to figure out on our own. So, how do people do it?

1:43 Option #1
The first way that it could be done is if health care is a big issue for you and your family. It may be the reason why you should keep your full-time job and enter into franchising as a semi-absentee owner. The semi-absentee ownership role would allow you to keep one foot in Corporate America with that great benefits package but have one foot in your future as a business owner.

2:10 Option #2
Another option, along those same lines, would be if you're married to have one spouse working in the business and one spouse keeping a job, so they can maintain the health care benefits for the family.

The third way that it can be done is to find benefits on your own. I've been self-employed for 25 years. I've maintained health care for myself during all of that time. With a little bit of research, you can find carriers and plans that hopefully will be affordable for you. One thing to consider is that as a business owner, your health care premiums are a tax deduction.

I don't know what health care needs you have, and I know that health care benefits can be very expensive, but so is the regret of never following your dream because you were worried about finding health care. If you have the will to own your own business, there will be a way. You just have to be willing to ask the questions because the answers are out there. The benefits that we do enjoy as business owners are stability, control, financial freedom, building a legacy for your family—benefits that may not pay health care bills, but they may lead to a happier, healthier you.
