Описание к видео The mood appeared cordial as 4 Middle East leaders commenced the talks aimed at creating a sovereign

(1 Sep 2010) HEADLINE: Obama, Mideast leaders on 'path of peace'?
NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOTLIST
CAPTION: The mood appeared cordial as Mideast leaders commenced the talks aimed at creating a sovereign Palestinian state beside a secure Israel. The Obama administration has spent its first 20 months in office coaxing both parties back to the table. (Sept. 1)
((Handshake (or not) Obama with Netanyahu and Abbas))
THIS was the picture the White House wanted -- after months of careful coaxing, Israeli and Palestinian leaders TOGETHER, and set for new face-to-face peace talks.
((To Obama at lectern))
But President Barack Obama greeted them with a question.
OBAMA SOT: (1:40 from start) Do we have the courage and the wisdom to walk the path of peace?
NETANYAHU SOT: (19:20 from start) We seek a peace that will end the conflict between us once and for all. We seek a peace that will last for generations.
From America's chief Arab ally came a caution the world is watching.
ABDULLAH: (16:30 from start) If hopes are disappointed again, the price of failure will be too high for all.
Yet their host, a Nobel Peace Prize-winner, took such warnings in stride.
((Cutaways))
OBAMA SOT: (At very end) I am hopeful, cautiously hopeful, but hopeful.
((Standup bridge))
The president's set an ambitious goal of accord within one year. But there's a familiar roadblock: Jewish settlements. Israel's current settlement-building freeze expires later this month. And Palestinians say if there's no extension, these talks are already done.
((Demos on West Bank))
The talks AND those settlements were the object of fresh demonstrations -- Palestinians convinced Israel's carving up land THEY want for a state.
((Back to Netanyahu))
But Benjamin Netanyahu's under heavy pressure from his own coalition to RESUME the construction SOME see as Israel's right.
((Footage of bullet-riddled car, police shouting))
Meantime, Palestinian security forces swept up scores of Hamas activists a day after four Israeli settlers were shot to death on the West Bank.
ISRAELI VOXPOP: "It seems that every time there's an attempt for peace talks, that causes a flareup in the violence." FONT: Yair Spitz, Efrat resident.
((To Obama outside Oval Office))
At the White House, the president called the attack "senseless slaughter", and said the talks will go on.
OBAMA SOT: (1:15 from start of statement with Netanyahu outside Oval) We are going to push back against these terrorist activities
((UPSOUND? Israeli funeral, close with shot of sobbing))
And as the leaders voiced defiance in Washington, back on the West Bank, more grieving loved ones buried their dead.
