A ratio is a comparison of two quantities. A proportion is an equality of two ratios.
We use ratios to make comparisons between two things. When we express ratios in words, we use the word "to" -- we say "the ratio of something to something else" -- for example, the ratio of squares to triangles in the illustration below. Ratios can be written in several different ways.
A proportion is simply a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be written in two ways: as two equal fractions a/b = c/d; or using a colon, a:b = c:d. The following proportion is read as "twenty is to twenty-five as four is to five."
