The return of Autumn Leaf Excursions on the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad was a welcome treat after a year and a half of uncertainty of whether or not the excursions could operate under pandemic regulations. Not only have they returned, but this year offered a rare three weekends of steam-powered excursions on the classic 120-mile round trip between Reading Outer Station and Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania (formerly known as Mauch Chunk). At the head of the train is ex-Gulf, Mobile & Northern #425, a 1928 Baldwin-built 4-6-2 "Pacific" known for its loud exhaust that draws fans from all over the country. At the time of writing, this is to be the last Autumn that the engine is pulling the Autumn Leaf Excursions, as the railroad's own ex-Reading 4-8-4 "Northern" #2102 is expected to take over the duties next year once its restoration is completed. With that in mind, the sharp blue Pacific put on a grand show in the peak foliage of the southern Pocono Mountains, and featured whistles from four northeastern railroads, including a Baltimore & Ohio 3 chime, a Pennsylvania Railroad 3 chime, a Boston & Maine 6 chime, and a Reading 6 chime.
