"Most the time you'll have the water that comes in, we'll have to pull out carpet, insulation, drywall, but a majority of the time insurance won't cover exterior water coming in," Chad Jameson, owner of PuroClean, said.

Water can get inside your basement.

"You want to check the slope of the ground and make sure that no water is actually going back towards the house most of the damage that we do see is because the slope is going towards the house," Jameson said.

Double check to make sure your windows are sealed and secure.

"Check any of your window seals or door seals to make sure that no water can get under there," Jameson said.

Try to make sure your roof won't leak either.

If you get more than a small spot of water in your house, make sure to have a professional clean it up.

"If it comes from the outside, it is going to be contaminated probably, so if it's just a small little area, you could probably use a wet dry vac and clean it up yourself and use some fans, but if it's too much, call a restoration company, or we could come out and take a look at it," Jameson said.

His advice is that it's better to prepare now, rather than fix the issue later.

"It's going to be more expensive on the front end, but on the end of it, it's going to be cheaper, because you're not going to have any damage to the inside of your house,"Jameson said. "Preparation that's the most important thing really if you're prepared for it, it won't be quiet as bad."

If you have a slope towards your house getting a landscaping company to fix the slope or sandbagging around your home can help keep the water out.
