Voici la bonne vieille bernique ou le rigolo chapeau chinois ! La patelle commune affectionne les estrans rocheux de la mer du Nord, de la Manche et de l’océan Atlantique. C’est un des organismes qu’on retrouve très haut sur l’estran et qui résiste très longtemps à l'émersion, même en plein soleil. Sa coquille est conique avec une base circulaire qui atteint 6 centimètres de diamètre. Plus l’estran est battu (hydrodynamisme important) et plus la coquille de la patelle sera aplatie. Elle se fixe solidement aux rochers pendant la marée basse et à marée haute elle part en vadrouille brouter des algues avant de revenir se placer à son emplacement initial dont les aspérités épousent parfaitement les contours de sa coquille (phénomène nommé le homing) ! La patelle est souvent recouverte d’algues, de balanes ou de vers.

The common limpet is fond of the rocky foreshore of the North Sea, the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the organisms that can be found high up on the foreshore and that resists emersion for a very long time, even in full sun. Its shell is conical with a circular base that reaches 6 centimetres in diameter. The more the foreshore is battered (strong hydrodynamics), the flatter the limpet shell will be. It attaches itself firmly to the rocks during low tide and at high tide it goes out to graze on seaweed before returning to its initial location, whose roughness perfectly matches the contours of its shell (a phenomenon known as homing)! The limpet is often covered with algae, barnacles or worms.
