This is one of my favorite parts of the build process as well as favorite finishes. French Polish is safe (grain alcohol and bugs), goes on slow, is simple to fix (during build or repair later) and is sonically transparent. The downsides to French Polish is it is not as durable as other finishes (soft and thin) and is water soluble (sweat will break it down) and I go over this with players when we chose a finish.

Below is my schedule and each session takes about 90 minutes for a Weissenborn style guitar. So that’s a little over 20 hours into the finish and completely worth it.

Wash coat (thick and wet coat of shellac only wiped on)
Light sanding (400 grit)
Wash coat
Body Session x6 (shellac, alcohol and oil padded on with muneca)
Level sanding (600 grit and mineral spirits)
Body Session x3 (shellac, alcohol and oil padded on with muneca)
Level sanding (800 grit and mineral spirits)
Body Session x2 (shellac, alcohol and oil padded on with muneca)
Rest (1-2 weeks)
Abrasive polish (Novus #2 fine scratch remover on soft cloth)

Hit me up with questions in the comments. Thank you for stopping by!!!
