Описание к видео Oral history interview with George Levi: Oklahoma Native Artists

Interview Date: 12/06/2014
Interviewer: Little Thunder, Julie Pearson
Interview Location: Mustang, Oklahoma

George Levi is well known for his ledger art, which focuses on the Cheyenne family in particular and lesser known aspects of Cheyenne life. His concepts are strongly influenced by the sources and time periods represented by the paper he uses, be it antique checks or hymnal pages. Levi was one of four Cheyenne artists whose art was displayed as part of an exhibit/lecture/discussion remembering the Sand Creek massacre. The exhibit series was launched at the Denver Art Museum before moving to Denver University and Northwestern University in Chicago. His images have appeared in two books on Cheyenne Arapaho culture, produced for Cheyenne Arapaho children in the Oklahoma public school system, and he has won numerous awards for his ledger art, hide paintings, and beadwork. He has also given a number of ledger-art and cultural-item workshops for Oklahoma tribal members, including the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Busby.
