In the last few days, controversies have raged over the query reportedly issued to the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Alhaji Takiat Yunus Olusina Ayilara, by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye.

Expectedly, it has turned to a kind of fight of Muslims versus Christians, with most commentators passing comments out of ignorance and religious sentiments.

However, my findings established that:

1. Chief Imam of Ogbomoso is an appointee of Soun.

2. Soun has been appointing the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso since 1818.

3. The immediate past Soun, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, appointed and installed the present Chief Imam.

4. There have been complaints from the Ayilara family concerning the paternity of the Chief Imam. They are claiming he is not from the family.

5. These complaints led to the setting up of a committee by the Soun-in-Council led by the Areago of Ogbomoso (There was no Soun at that time).

6. Based on the Committee Report, the Chief Imam was asked to STEP ASIDE and go back to his family to sort out issues - the present Soun, Oba Ghandi Olaoye was not on the throne then.

7. Rather than go back to his family to sort out issues, the Chief Imam went to Court.

8. When the present Soun, Oba Ghandi Olaoye was enthroned, the same Ayilara family brought complaints on the Chief Imam.

9. The Soun, also, set up a committee to investigate the claims of the Ayilara family and the committee came up with the same report as the one set up by the Soun-in-Council under the Areago. The Committee set up by Oba Ghandi Olaoye was headed by High Chief Alhaji Yusuf Kasali, the Abese of Ogbomoso.

10. The Chief Imam was again asked to STEP ASIDE and go to his family to sort out things. He filed another suit against the Soun and others.

11. Eight different Muslim groups also demanded the removal of the Chief Imam, but the Soun insisted that he should be allowed to sort out the issue of his paternity with the Ayilara family.

12. The Special Committee on Islamic Affairs in Ogbomoso and the League of Imams and Alfas, which oversaw the nomination of the Chief Imam also mounted pressure for his removal, but Soun pleaded he be allowed to resolve his paternity issue with the Ayilara family.

13. On the query reportedly issued the Chief Imam by the Soun, it is on record that consequent upon the suit filed against the Soun and others by the Chief Imam, the Soun wrote him (Chief Imam) on February 14, 2024, telling him to stop taking part in palace activities pending determination of the suit.

14. The letter did not in any way stop the Chief Imam from carrying out the functions of his office.

15. The query too did not stop the Chief Imam from carrying out his functions. If anything, the query further authenticate the Chief Imam's recognition by the Soun.

Now, where is the Soun's fault in all these?

Or is it that the Soun of Ogbomoso no longer have authority over his appointees, including the Chief Imam?

In Yorubaland, Kings do not have any religion. Ọba ò ní ẹ̀sìn.

As for the Chief Imam, he should heed the advice of the Chief Imam of Offa, Sheikh Muyideen Hussein. He should focus his mind on resolving issues with his family members because as I have established, Soun, Oba Ghandi Olaoye is not his enemy.
