You asked a really good question. You want to know what complications exist, if any, to a mother who's having a child over the age of 35. And the short answer to that question is that basically your chances are 2-3 times higher in developing complications during pregnancy. Specific complications that you might develop are hypertension and gestational diabetes. Those are the 2 big ones. But other complications exist for women who are having children in later years. For example, ectopic pregnancy rates are higher, it can be a little bit harder to get pregnant, and for women who get pregnant, the rate of spontaneous miscarriage is higher. There's also greater risk to the baby. For example, congenital anomalies and other defects are higher in women who have babies over the age of 35, babies are born at a lower birthweight, and actually, maternal and infant mortality rates are higher after the age of 35.

There are many different theories surrounding why the incidence of complication is higher.
