STORYLINE
Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in London on Tuesday, just one day after an international conference pledged (b) billions in aid to the Palestinians.
During the conference in Paris, on Monday, 87 countries and international organisations pledged 7.4 (b) billion US dollars over the next three years for the Palestinians.
The most ambitious fundraising effort in more than a decade is aimed at helping the Palestinians create a viable, peaceful and secure state, and to promote new peace talks with Israel.
On Tuesday, Brown said the pledges made by donors at the Paris conference "underline the international community's commitment that 2008 is year of great opportunity for the creation of a viable state of Palestine alongside a secure state of Israel."
Abbas agreed, telling reporters at a joint news conference with Brown that, "the Annapolis and Paris conferences are a strong push forward for the peace process."
"We are determined to reach a fair and just peace in the year 2008," the Palestinian president added.
Abbas once again called on Israel to freeze building of Jewish settlements, without excuses or exceptions.
"The (Israeli) settlements, and the ongoing establishment of (Israeli) settlements are major impediments facing the progress of the peace process," he insisted.
Palestinians were outraged by Israel's announcement, within days of the formal start of the new peace effort at the US-backed Annapolis peace conference last month - that it planned hundreds of new Jewish houses on war-won land in east Jerusalem.
Abbas took the opportunity to condemn the Israeli military incursion into Gaza but stressed that the Palestinian authority also strongly condemns "the firing of rockets from Gaza towards Israeli settlements."
Israeli-Palestinian peace talks resumed last week after seven years of diplomatic deadlock, and international aid is seen as key to making the process work.
