Here’s how to choose the best colour palette for your painting:

🍎 WHAT do you paint? If you want to mix the widest range of bright, chromatic colours try a CMY based split-primary palette. However, you may actually prefer the naturalistic tones of a traditional palette like the Zorn for landscapes/portraits.

🧑‍🎨 WHO inspires you? Google the colour palettes of your favourite painters, current or historical, & get a sense of what paint colours were used to create the works you love.

⏱️It matters WHEN you paint. Bright modern pigments are a byproduct of the Industrial Revolution & later organic chemistry so you won’t find them on pre-impressionist palettes & lots of traditional pigments are quite toxic & are definitely left in the past!

💅 HOW you paint? Every pigment has unique physical characteristics & some are better suited to your painting style. Eg. many reds look the same as cadmium red but are more transparent, dry faster, are more durable, have a weaker tinting strength, cooler undertones or just feel different on the brush. You can find these attributes on the paint tube labels (see my old video for more).

🌈 WHERE to go wrong? No two artists use the same colour palette & there’s no real way to go wrong if it suits you & your work. Just keep in mind a versatile colour palette is usually evenly spaced around the colour wheel & from dark to light.
