Viewer's Fave: Kutumbh's Massive Goan Thali, Panjim, Goa, August 2023

Thanks to our viewer Mr Ritesh Pawar for recommending that we visit Kutumbh in Panjim. The chonak thali and special Goan mixed thali which we tried was just superb.

Other restaurants nearby are very famous and Insta savvy but we have no hesitation in saying that Kutumbh’s food is the true taste of home. We had a really enjoyable meal and at just over Rs 300 per head, with a soft drink each, it was very reasonable also.

Kutumbh is located on Dr Dada Vaidya Road, which connects Panjim’s Immaculate Conception church and Jama Masjid on one side, to the majestic Shree Mahalaxmi Temple on the other side. Kutumbh is just a few steps away from the temple.

The menu has a Kutumbh special Goan mixed thali (Rs 480), which we were immediately curious about. The description of items included rawa fried prawns and kingfish, fish curry, teesrio, kismur and chicken cafreal. This we had to try. So Maria and I would share the Kutumbh special Goan mixed thali (Rs 480) and Evelyn had the chonak thali (Rs 300).

Kutumbh's chonak thali had rice, prawns daangar (cutlet), roti, chonak, fish curry, teesrio, kismur, salad, French beans bhaji, sheera and sal kadi.

The Kutumbh special Goan mixed thali has prawns cutlet/prawns daangar, fish curry, crab xec xec (not xacuti!), chicken cafreal, dry prawn kismur, teesrio, French beans bhaji, salad, sheera, sal kadi, fried prawns, fied kingfish, roti and rice.

They serve the special thali in unique shaped, specially made thalis which they got from Kolhapur.

The food was just superb. Everything in the thali was tasty, especially the crab xec xec, prawns, all the fish items. It was a very nice touch that they had sheera, a traditional Goan sweet and didn’t just put some gulab jam or something from the mithai shop on the plate. For two of us the Kutumbh special thali at Rs 480 was effectively Rs 240 a head, and we could not finish it completely. It's difficult to find that kind of value for money in Panjim.

Besides a variety of thalis, Kutumbh also has a la carte Goan dishes like mutton xacuti (Rs 390), pomfret rechead (Rs 600) and veg caldin (Rs 180), besides a wide Chinese, Thai, tandoori and Continental menu.
