This week, we will be exploring some ethnic and tribal jewellery from different parts of India! In focus are the ornaments of the Santali Tribe from Birbhum district in West Bengal, India.

Mainly concentrated in Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, and Tripura, the Santals form one of the largest tribal groups in eastern India. The ornaments are mostly made of silver with filigree motifs.

In this reel, one can see the various ornaments types worn by the Santals for different body parts such as Ghungur/Panjap (anklet with bells on it), Khadu (anklet with a solid structure), Bala Sakam (bangle), Tikri Mala (long necklace), an amulet necklace, pagra (earrings) as well as several hair ornaments like Tikli (worn in the middle of the forehead), Pan Kanta (hairpin), and Sud Pashi (hairpin).
