Trinnov Altitude 16 Install & First Use Hands-On

Over the last few days, I installed the Trinnov Altitude 16 in place of Marantz AV7704. I was excited to get this device and really start exploring it, but my initial experience was marred by various issues.

I made the mistake of not pre-thinking the connections enough to realize that I couldn't plug in my subs (which only have RCA inputs) to a preamp that only outputs XLR. Then, like a home theater noob I even bought the wrong cables on the first attempt.

Once getting the proper cables and being ready to fully connect, I experienced some integration issues additionally with my subs no triggering power on, weird speaker pops I've not experienced before, and lack of HDCP pass through the Trinnov with my Kaleidescape. It's been a rocky starting experience...

I'm also finding myself not as a big fan of the Trinnov menu and setup system compared to more contemporary UI design expectations. It feels very power, but also very raw, and not interactively great. I also had a variety of items configured that seem to be getting lost and not saved. I'll work through the concerns though for sure in the coming days with a bit more troubleshooting time and attention. Perhaps I need to learn more to operate this beast properly as well.

I'm still looking forward to getting everything stable operationally and move into advanced calibration and then real content exploration. Stay tuned!
