Hellion sprang out of the early-’80s L.A. metal scene led by powerhouse vocalist Ann Boleyn. Formed around 1982, the band pushed into clubs and radio, eventually issuing their debut LP Screams in the Night—home to the cult interlude “Upside Down Guitar Solo”—and nabbing MTV/VH1 exposure for “Bad Attitude,” a breakthrough moment for a female-fronted U.S. metal act. Boleyn also launched New Renaissance Records when U.S. labels balked, helping get Hellion’s music into wider circulation. (In her later years, Boleyn did something almost no one in the Strip’s heyday would’ve predicted—she went back to school, earned a B.A. at UCLA, then a J.D., and became an attorney who’s spoken openly about using the law to challenge music-industry sexism.)

This upload spotlights guitarist Chet Thompson, whose flash and feel became a signature of the classic lineup. Thompson studied with Randy Rhoads in the late ’70s/early ’80s, and has said Rhoads called him his “best student”—Randy even steered him into his first serious band before Chet eventually landed in Hellion. That Rhoads lineage shows up in Chet’s classical-leaning sequences, tight alternate picking, and a flair for stagecraft (including the upside-down/two-handed passages that inspired this solo feature).
