Tripura Sundari Temple is an ancient Hindu temple of Goddess #TripuraSundari, locally known as Goddess #Tripureshwari. The temple is located in ancient Udaipur, about 55 km from Agartala. This temple known as #Matabari is situated on a small hill. A hill that is shaped like a tortoise's kurma or hut. That is why this #ShaktiPeetha is also considered as Kurmapeshiki.
‌ The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Legend has it that the little toe of Sati's left foot fell here. And since then this power has been worshiped as Tripura Sundari. #MaharajaDanyaManikya of Tripura built the main temple with a three-tiered roof in 1501 AD.
In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple there are two similar but different sized black stone idols of the goddess. The larger idol is Goddess Tripura Sundari which is 5 feet high and the smaller idol is Goddess Chandi which is 2 feet high. It is said that the small idol was taken by the kings of Tripura to the battlefield.
It is said that in the last years of the 15th century, the king of Tripura, Dhanya Manikya, revealed in a dream one night that the goddess Tripura Sundari had instructed him to start his worship on a hilltop near the city of #Udaipur. The king learned that a temple on the hill had already been dedicated to #LordVishnu. He could not decide how a temple dedicated to Vishnu could hold a statue of Shakti. The next night that divine power was repeated again. The king realized that Vishnu and Shakti were different forms of the same supreme deity. So, in 1501, King Dhanya Manikya established the #Tripureshwaritemple on the top of that hill. Every year on the occasion of #Diwali a famous fair is held in the temple premises, where more than two lakh visitors gather.
Like other ordinary Hindu temples, this temple also sells flowers and peras in roadside stalls which visitors offer to the goddess as offerings. The pera given here has gained a lot of fame at home and abroad. The red blood-stained flower is also valuable as an offering to the goddess. The practice of animal sacrifice has been going on for the last 500 years. Patha and buffalo are sacrificed daily on that occasion.
Kalyan Sagar is located on the east side of the temple. The area of #KalyanSagarLake is two point seven five acres. The lake is considered sacred and devotees come here to worship fish and turtles. The presence of a large number of rare species of tortoises is also observed in the Kalyan sagar lake. However, catching and marketing fish or turtles of Kalyan Sagar is completely prohibited. Fans offer science-based floating food to quench their hunger.
Tripura Sundari Temple Trust has taken huge initiative in the development of Tripura Sundari Mandir. These include many parking facilities, underground cabling, reverse osmosis units, accommodation for pilgrims with modern facilities, multi-facility centers for elderly and pregnant women - such as rest rooms, breastfeeding centers and child care units.
In the coming days, with the successful initiative of the state government, Udaipur and Tripureshwari temples will be able to showcase its heritage and monuments to more and more visitors. We are hopeful that one day this temple will be surrounded by the largest tourist hub in the North East. And that day is just waiting for the time. I wish all the best.
