Over the course of three albums, A.A. made a name for himself with album one: “Dirk ….”slightly strange and tangy, album two: “Kings”….more accessible and with tribal beats and album three: “Prince Charming”- the full commercial exposure with colourful and inventive videos: Adam Ant was one of the first stars to fully embrace the commercial visibility of MTV with his striking and exuberant videos.
Once he went solo, it seemed he peaked; like many early stars of MTV and the early 80s and he appeared to keep a lower profile.
However in the last decade or so he has reclaimed his reputation as a great performer and we have evidence of that here and now.
With a crack band including longtime guitarist Will from Glam/Psych band ‘Rachel Stamp” and new drummer Jola from ‘The Priscilla’s’, a classic tension is exhumed from the album that brought him to attention: His second: “Kings Of The Wild Frontier” which is the transition album between his weird obscure new wave of “Dirk” and the Kaleidoscope pirate MTV vision pop that is “Prince Charming.”
For the first of two packed out London gigs of the week (he would play less than a week away at Hammersmith Apollo) Adam does a slow burn of this classic cut (45 years old-kids!) and shows us who’s the king.
