Keeping Up Appearances with the Edwardians (Choosing Fashion over Food)

Edwardian appearance meant everything, so much so they bought cheap food so they could afford smart clothes. It was important to make an impression on your neighbours, and for the poor and working classes the pawnbroker was ever-present where they could sell their best clothes when money was short, if only temporarily, so that the money could feed the family for another week. And if this wasn't enough, money lenders could easily be found on the streets, ready to trap anyone desperate enough for cash into extortionate repayments.
