What’s up! I’m taking a break from this walk in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina to talk about music business. For musicians trying to fill their calendars, I want to talk to you and give more tips. Now the reason I’m doing this is that I want to let you know about the upcoming “Music Business Mastermind Course” that I’m launching on Nov 15, it’s a month long intensive course. You can get info below this video and you can even click that link to schedule a call with me, It’s totally free call; I will spend time with you and help you with your business, and there’s no obligation whatsoever. There are upcoming live workshops in Minneapolis, and Asheville so make sure you click the link below the video and get more info.
In the meantime, I wanna talk to you about music business and give you something that you can use right away. So, here is the basic process that I’ve started to break down to basically four or five steps.
The first step is to actually decide that you’re gonna treat your music as a business. I don’t mean that in some kind of a “zen” way, I mean just actually decide how many hours a week you're going to spend on your business. I recommend a minimum of 10, about 2 hours a day, that you work on your business; kind of like office work, as some people would call it. It doesn’t have to be in the office, but it’s just basically the work not about practicing your instrument, but work dedicated to getting gigs, getting clients, getting paid, filling in your calendars, so that’s the first step. I think a lot of musicians actually think that they need to practice more and that’s how they’re gonna succeed in business and I really disagree with that and I’ll give you two reasons why: Number 1, I’m sure you know musicians, you know great musicians that are better than you, more advanced, more experienced musicians, or even more talented musicians who aren’t working at all. I’m sure you know musicians that can probably play or write or produce or sing circles around or making twice as more as you do, if that’s a yes, I think that bolsters my argument but basically that’s not a direct line between ability and filling your calendar or you know getting paid. So what is the direct line? I think the direct line to getting paid is doing business work, you know whatever you can call that. I think of it mostly with sales and marketing, focus and effort, doing it the right way, being comfortable with the processing and how you can go about selling and marketing whatever services you’ll profit. Alright, so maybe that sounds obvious but I think it’s important. Once you accept that you’re gonna have a successful music business you have to practice business which means trying stuff, and if it doesn’t work tweaking it and then try something else. So the first step is basically, if you can this right now, decide how many hours a week just on a work just on music business and you can ideally put it in your calendar. So that’s the step 1.
